Without a doubt, one of the most powerful tools to maximize your potential to produce better results is coaching. A client may initially hire a coach to reach a professional goal or they may be looking to make a personal lifestyle change. We live in a fast-paced world with a myriad of changes happening beyond one's control. However, taking a leap of faith into exploring your own potential puts you in control with more confidence. You already are! Awakening to meet your potential is an invitation to make room for who you are to flow into expression.

The coaching profession is growing. Fortune 500 companies and small businesses hire coaches to improve leadership development and their bottom line. Men and women who are reinventing themselves invest in coaching to get on the right track to their new direction. These investments create more certainty and help relieve stress.

There are differences of opinions about whether a coach should be experienced in the field of the client. As a coach, it is my job to raise your awareness to your potential. Coaching doesn't start with "there is something wrong" or about fixing. It starts from a place of potential awareness, wherein inner knowledge is awakened. Deeper inquiries compel the client to go further down the rabbit hole, to examine, to look, to feel and to be engaged. This is fascinating when a client makes a breakthrough with alternative choices followed by taking responsibility in taking action.

With a tangible result most often there is a measure that has been met or not met personally or professionally. Maybe it's reaching a certain performance in sports or a specific result in business/lifestyle. Either way it is measurable. Coaching works in maximizing one's potential. What I love about coaching is that these results are bonuses. The real joy is the shift in intangible breakthroughs.

Intangible results seem to live in the shadows, but they are the ones that motivate, inspire and speak loudly of who you are. They are character builders. In growing awareness the client's values get stronger. Outwardly you walk with better posture and more vitality. You have less stress and better relationships, because you are choosing, taking responsibility for yourself, and taking action in being who you are called to be.

Coaching is an investment, but aren't you worth it? Nature evolves and so do you. You get to choose and be responsible for awakening and living your potential. Numerous books and studies verify that going deeper down the rabbit hole is healthier and living life fully. Oh, and by the way, coaching is not for the faint of heart!

ThermoWorks The Original Cooking Thermometer/Timer four down and none to go - Sandra E. Malkovsky -
I really am quite careful with my kitchen equipment so when this unit stopped working after a couple of uses, I assumed I had a defective unit, I returned it for another one. This one too died after a few uses. I read more about it on line, bought new one, and an extra probe because the manufacturer suggested it. I treated it with the most tender kid gloves and again I found after only two or three uses, it did not work. So I have given up, it is going to the electronic recycling. My last probe broke after one use. I am posting this only to help others not waste money!

I've been using this product for over 2 years and love it. I give it as wedding shower gifts, because it's one of my most useful kitchen tools. (Mine was marketed under the Sunbeam name, but it's absolutely IDENTICAL to this model TW362B, except mine has white buttons.) I've been researching these thermometers again, because I'm getting ready to buy a second one as a backup: I don't want to be without this item for even one day.

Before buying this model, I went through 2 other brands / models, and this one is best. I generally use it several times a week. For example, I insert it in my whole-wheat bread loaves after they've baked for 15 minutes; the alarm enables me to remove them from my baking stone at the perfect time, when the interior temp is 194. Keeping the probe in the loaf for a few minutes after removing the latter from the oven has enabled me to determine that residual heat causes the interior temp to rise to the desired 200 degrees. People compliment me on these loaves all the time, and I've never had a failure since I started using this tool.

My probe has been dropped numerous times, but I've never had to replace any parts and it's still working great.

I suspect the negative reviews are due to one of the following:

1) Some people appear to have been writing about the OLDER model, not the new and improved Model TW362B.

2) Maybe people have been using it at temps that are too high. Like ALL other probe-and-cable type thermometers that I've seen, this one can't be used in ovens that have been heated to high temps, and I wouldn't think it could tolerate the high heat of a grill, for instance. That may explain many of the failures people have written about!

The instructions say not to put it inside an oven that is hotter than 392 degrees (presumably because the oven heat would damage the cable and/or sensor). For a while, I was setting my oven to that temp. Then I learned elsewhere that when you set your oven to 350, it can actually spike up to 400 while it's heating. So now I try to avoid using this thermometer in any oven hotter than about 360, which is the temp I use for my bread. (I leave the probe sticking in the bread for 20 minutes at a time in a 360 oven, and so far it's worked fine.)

Having said that, I must admit that several times I've forgotten and put it in a 375 to 400-degree oven for maybe 10 minutes at a time, and no harm has come of it. Now that I've heard you can risk higher temps if you wrap the probe cord in foil, I may go up to 400 deliberately, but only after I get my back-up.

Thermoworks, are you listening? How about upgrading this model so that it can tolerate higher temps? Except for that detail, it's just about perfect, and I hope you keep carrying it!

3) Maybe people have been getting sensitive parts WET. Somewhere I read that for probe-and-cable thermometers of this type, the place where the cable attaches to the curved steel of the probe can't be made truly waterproof, so it shouldn't be submerged. I hand-wash my probe, of course, and I've been careful to keep that spot dry (as well as the other end--the part that inserts into the main body of the thermometer).

If I need to soak my probe (which rarely happens, but sometimes I leave it overnight and bread crumbs are stuck to it the next day), I stand it in a small glass of soapy warm water, which makes it easy to keep the cable-joining part high and dry. That works well; the stuck-on stuff then wipes off very easily and quickly.

4) Regarding alarms that don't go off: at one point I thought my unit had gone bad because its alarm inexplicably stopped working. Then when I finally looked at it carefully, I discovered that my daughter had turned the alarm OFF without telling me! A simple flip of the switch cured that problem. (My previous models had lacked that switch, so I hadn't paid any attention to the switch.)

I haven't ever used the magnet, because magnets on ANY product never seem to hold as they claim.

In summary, I've found this to be a great product with MANY uses.
ThermoWorks: TW362B Now with on and off switch! A huge kitchen favorite and must-have! Once you use this in your kitchen, you will never want to be without it. The original version of this product has probably been the most widely chosen oven-cooking alarm in the market. It's not easy to improve on that but ThermoWorks has. From customer comments, the most frequently suggested new feature has been an On/Off switch to save on battery life. (The old one couldn't be shut off but batteries lasted months.) So, they've updated the housing to a more robust design and added a slide switch so the unit can be powered off. The proven circuit is the same and the button arrangement is slightly improved. The well-loved simplicity has been kept so you won't need to find the instructions each time you set an alarm. The new stylish housing folds the display up for counter use or flat for less obtrusive magnetic mounting to an appliance door.Cook's Illustrated said this: "The best of the bunch, an easy to use thermometer from ThermoWorks ()" and "This user-friendly model allows you to view both time and temperature simultaneously and is free of the annoying and unnecessary USDA recommended presets for various types of meat that are all too common in other brands.

How to Barbecue Better Using Cooking Grates

Cooking grates come in different types and materials, and each has its own advantages, depending on its use and the preference of the cook. Grill grates hold your food when you are barbecuing or grilling. So let us take a look at the choices available when it comes to outdoor cooking grates.

When it comes to popularity, cast iron grates seem to be the choice. The heavier wide cast iron grates can hold heat for a long time and cook evenly. As a result, you get well seared, quickly cooked food. The only problem with iron grill grates is maintenance. Apart from the regular cleaning, you must ensure that cast iron grills are well seasoned before you use them and this must be done periodically even when they are in regular use. They do come with manufacturers instructions on how to season them. While it is not a difficult task to season them, neglecting to do it can result in rust. If you do keep them well seasoned, cast iron can be as good as nonstick grates and appear to last longer than a lifetime.

A better option, if you want the advantage of longer heat but not the associated maintenance hassle with cast iron, you can opt for porcelain coated iron grates. These combine the quality of durability, as well as avoid the problem of rust as long as the porcelain coating is intact. Over time, the porcelain coating can crack, chip or wear off unless you are really careful when you handle it. At the time of cleaning, it is better to use brass bristles in place of metal scrapers with hard edges.

Stainless cooking grates for grills are less durable than iron; however, with good care, these can also last a long time. You also get steel grates coated with porcelain just like cast iron grates coated with porcelain. One problem, however, is that these grates are quite thin and too widely spaced to hold heat. While this does not really affect smoking or indirectly cooking huge portions of meat, beef, steaks and chops could pose an issue since you will not get those attractive grill marks. Serious chefs prefer wider grates.

If you compare stainless cooking grates for grills, porcelain enameled cast iron cooking grates and porcelain coated cast iron grates, porcelain coated cast iron grates let you cook at lower temperatures because there is longer retention of heat. Stainless steel grates come with the longest warranty followed by porcelain coated cast iron grates and the porcelain enameled ones.

Generally, it is better to buy stainless cooking grates for bbq grills so that they are not prone to rust. Often we find barbecue grills that are perfect with all the features we want at a price that is hard to refuse, yet does not have the kind of grate we want. In such cases, you can always check with the manufacturer. For example, you can opt for Weber porcelain enameled cast iron cooking grates that give you the advantage of long lasting grates that retain excellent heat and are supposed to be easy to maintain. But most weekend barbecuers feel that it is hard to keep it seasoned because they get so heated. This manufacturer also offers the option of choosing stainless cooking grates for the grills. These are easy to clean before cooking. By coating them with oil, you can keep food from sticking to it. Importantly, the grill marks are prominent. Another big advantage of stainless steel is its lightweight property making it easy to handle particularly while adding wood or briquettes to your smoker box. Stainless steel is also a good material for camping cooking grates.

I have to admit I am a pizza snob. I have spent most of my life searching for the most delicious pizza. Along my never ending journey I have come up with some must haves when making the perfect pizza. The most important thing I learned is that freshness counts. Whether it's the dough, sauce or the various toppings you prefer, you will always be a winner with fresh ingredients. The fresher the ingredients the better the taste of the pizza.

The most overlooked part of the perfect pizza is the dough used to make the crust. It doesn't matter if you prefer thin or thick crust. It just has to have flavor. I find that many pizza places these days use frozen dough they just roll out and serve. The crust is the foundation of the pizza and must not be overlooked. A pizza with a flavorless crust will be a disappointment to all who taste it.

After you have your dough, it is on to the sauce! Here you can choose a nice red sauce or go crazy and use a white sauce with garlic. It is all about the flavors you like. Taste, taste, taste, until you have the sauce you want. I like adding a little bit of garlic, oregano and sugar to my red sauce. That combination really makes my taste buds go wild.

Next we have the cheese we will use. To most people this would seem to be the easiest part. I have found that you actually need a good mixture of a few cheeses to get the right taste and texture for a perfect pizza. I hate it when I grab a slice and the cheese rips off the toppings of all the other slices. If you mix different kinds of cheese you will get a mix that actually breaks instead of stringing together. The combination I like to use is one half mozzarella, one quarter provolone, and one quarter jack cheese.

Last but not least, the toppings. This is actually the easiest part. All you have to do is choose the things you want on your pizza. Whether you are as simplistic as just cheese, or you like to spice things up with jalapenos and pineapple, you can't go wrong with what you like. The only tip I have for toppings is to make sure you spread them out evenly so that every bite has the same delicious taste you crave.

How many times have you heard working parents complaining about the lack of time to prepare supper for the family on busy weeknights?

The sad truth is, when parents work all day, pick the kids up from school and get home, it is usually past six o'clock. Then starts the shuffling through the kitchen from fridge to stove, from pantry to cutting board to prepare a wholesome home cooked meal! They end up completely exhausted by 7:30.

Your elderly neighbors might also appreciate a home cooked meal once in a while. Elderly folks tend to stay away from the stove more and more, eating commercial food from the refrigerator.

Preparing good nutritious meals for families and neighbors is easy if you like to cook. It can also generate a decent part-time or full-time income, depending on how much time you are willing to dedicate to the task.

Start with a small survey of parents from your children's school, your neighbors, friends and family. You might be surprised how many are interested in buying home cooked meals. Use your email to reach more people, and ask your family and friends to pass your offer on to their entourage.

Now would be the time to begin creating menus on a weekly basis. You can offer one or two kinds of soups, one or two main courses, a few side dishes and a dessert.

Time to calculate prices! Go the grocery store and buy only the ingredients you need for your menu. Cook everything up in sizes of four portions and calculate how much it cost you. Double that amount to get your price. Usually the complete menu to feed a family of four for a week is still very reasonable for the buyer. Compared to frozen entrees from the supermarket, home cooking is cheaper and often tastier and healthier. Plus, the more you cook at a time, the more you increase your hourly rate.

Email the interested people with the prototype menu and ask for comments or suggestions.

Now, how to deliver all this good food. You can either offer to deliver the food once a week or have the people come pick it up.

To save money on packaging, there are a few options to consider.

You can buy low-cost plastic containers to sell the food, and add the cost of the containers to your pricing. You can offer a deal to recurring clients by asking them to bring the containers back when they are done the price of the containers will be deducted from the total.

Investing in a vacuum-seal machine can also be very interesting. Add a dollar to each weekly menu and cover the cost of your machine in a few months. This way, you can also freeze portions of leftovers and sell them by the item when there is a demand. Sealing food by vacuum is probably the best way to keep food fresh longer.

The food with which you cook plays a very big role in how you cook, as well as how good it all tastes at the end. For instance, the less fresh the vegetables, the longer they have to be cooked, as water will have been continuously evaporating through the skin leaving the vegetables dryer and dryer. Fresher vegetables also tend to be sweeter and better tasting.

So we have the first rule: Cook with the freshest possible ingredients

Another important point is the fact that most ingredients have a seasonal period when they taste best, are cheaper and are also plentiful. Cooking with seasonal ingredients will give the best results.

So the second rule is: Cook mainly with the produce of the season.

When you are learning to cook in a new style, I highly recommend that you focus on doing simple meals, but very well and in accordance with the general principles taught in the book or the ebook you are using; rather than going overboard (to begin with), buying very expensive ingredients to make a very complicated meal that might not turn out right. For instance, the best lobster or the best duck liver will be a nightmare to eat if badly prepared by overcooking, or if too salty. I have used this thermometer several times with great success. Before purchasing this, there were many occasions when I relied on time per pound alone to determine doneness of the meat(invariable the meat was overdone). With this remote thermometer, I continue in the kitchen while my meat is safely smoking or grilling outside. Be sure to turn on both pieces--the transmitter and receiver. I also use it in my oven as it keeps me from guessing the temperature. You are able to guage when the meat is going to be done in order to prepare the rest of the meal to facilitate everything getting done at the same time.
I'm a thermometer nut so I have lots of different brands. I have this exact thermometer with a different brand on it but it's exactly the same as the photo. I've used it for about 3 years with no failures in the probe. I haven't found a source of replacement probes yet so I don't use this one on my outdoor grill as I'm afraid of burning out the cable and not finding a replacement. But, I do use it indoors all the time and I find it to be pretty accurate. I compare it to my Thermapen and it reads pretty close in ice water. The wireless operation is pretty reliable. I can go all over the house and the unit still picks up the signal. Operation is very intuitive so I've never read the instructions. That's uncommon for wireless models in my opinion. I think this is a better deal than some of the other Mavericks. As far as not showing rare, medium or well-done; I prefer it that way. The pre-sets in other models are always useless. You want the alarm to sound BEFORE it reaches the pre-sets and you want to allow for a temperature rise during "resting" so this model is perfect and simple. Great value at this price. This is the beloved tool of salad eaters and portion controllers.

We are strict about kitchen tools in my house. They must meet one of two criteria: space and flavor. We find that criteria like expediency and waist-lines usually violate our first two, but this mister is a great exception.

The fine mist ideal for two other applications: greasing baking pans (sayonara, Pam!) and oiling up delicate things that I don't want to toss too much (e.g., pan-roasted artichoke hearts, oven-roasted asparagus, sweet potato oven-baked fries).

Now that we are learning more cooking techniques in the kitchen, I hate to ruin my practice with a cold, ad-hoc dose of oil.

Like many tools, even intuitive ones need you to learn a little first. Once I read the tips on reviews here, I realized this is not broken, I was! Now it's out of the cupboard and back in full rotation on the counter, going strong at year 5.
In our two chef home, we are picky about both kitchen gadgets and the quality of products we use. This kitchen gadget was purchased in order to stop using the cheapest and worst tasting oil that goes into the store bought pre-packaged spray oil. Trust me, you'll see the difference immediately. On top of that, read the label on a can of Pam or Crisco spray oil...it's not just "Olive Oil" and I have no desire for propellants and additives in my body or food for that matter.

This is designed to use pressure created by pumping in order to create an oil mist, rather than propellants or additives. And you choose the oil and refill...which means better tasting oil and less cost.

For all that, I love it. I don't love that sometimes I THINK I've pumped it enough times and too much oil drizzles out. Just because I watch my oil intake and I don't exactly apply it liberally. I'm pretty sure I've finally mastered the skill of getting a fine mist via pumping til I feel the most pressure...and that only takes a few pumps.

Uses:

I save fat by using on pots and pans and baking dishes rather than buttering. For example, using a mist of olive oil on a pan to saute veggies or frying an egg, rather than butter gobs.

On the grill. Mist on the grate or grill pans. Also perfect for misting veggies prior to throwing them on the grill. I love grilled pizza...oh, it's heavenly...so I spray the grill grates, throw on my dough, wait til it's cooked on one side, flip it, add sauce, cheese and toppings...nothing tastes as good as grilled pizza in my opinion.

Anywhere you want a fine mist of oil...for avoiding sticking or avoiding more fat.

Conclusion: Although I might cuss it when it sprays too much oil in, I still use it pretty much daily and would never go without it now because using good all natural olive oil tastes so much better and is cheaper to refill, prevents waste of empty spray cans, and is better for you.

You choose what kind of oil you put in it, of course...we just prefer olive oil.

For the ancients, the first great virgin Hestia (her nieces Athene and Artemis were also virgins) was a goddess of enormous importance. Many students of legend fail to recognize the extreme importance of this goddess because there are few known surviving statues or altars dedicated to her. Yet the ancient Greeks believed every single home contained a shrine to Hestia in the form of the hearth, and most cities had a prytaneium, or public hearth, within which burned a perpetual flame in honor of the goddess. Another reason this daughter of Rheia and Kronos, and therefore sister to Zeus, is often overlooked is because there are few surviving stories about her. Seeing as her place is fixed in the home, the Greeks probably thought her as a goddess who was self-evident and in no need of immaculate stories.

Most modern commentators simply call Hestia the goddess of the hearth, with very little further comment, which seems to suggest she was an unimportant deity. Indeed, the hearth does not seem very important in our modern world of water heaters, furnaces, microwaves, and ovens. However, we have to see the hearth from the eyes of the ancients. The hearth was the center of the home and its fire, which is the actual province of Hestia as opposed to the actual hearth structure, not only cooled the home during cooler times, but also cooked all the meals. We normally think of hearths in living rooms and bedrooms, but for the ancients the hearth was also the kitchen.

So, as her sister Demeter provided the crops and her niece Artemis provided game, Hestia provided a place for the food to be prepared. Since her presence always cooked, or purified, the food, the first portion of any sacrifice was always offered to her. If one thinks how, even in modern times, the kitchen often becomes the center of family and social life, it can be realized that Hestia was enormously important, even if her realm has somewhat changed. Due to the fact that the family did gather around the hearth, Hestia was also seen as the goddess of the family even though she, herself, was a virgin. Thus, Hestia was also the goddess of the citizen and community. So, when one looks at the fixed state of Hestia in the fire within the familial and social hearth, it becomes extremely difficult to deny the enormity of her importance for the ancients. Children love to play and help in the kitchen. Teaching your child to cook can be a terrific memory for both of you, as well as a valuable learning experience for him or her. Counter messes are not only unattractive; they can make your work surface and utensils slippery, and they are a breeding ground for unwelcome bacteria. On the other hand, realize that cooking with kids is naturally a messy business. Keep your sense of humor.

As kids get older, they can take on more responsibility and can learn new skills in the kitchen. With these skills come new rules.

Do not ever stick anything in the bowl while the mixer is running, especially your fingers.

Once they are using the stove and oven, remind them to always use an oven mitt, and that microwaved containers may be quite hot.

After a long day at work, would it be nice to come home to a dinner table set with plates, drinks, napkins and forks? Or even better, how about walking into the smell of aromatic delight coming from your kitchen? It is possible to have your kids, prepare a meal with dad's supervision and with some initial teaching and training.

Children naturally love to explore, and cooking is the best way for them to become creative. Why? It teaches many skills including: confidence, creativity, math, science, reading, geography, nutrition, healthy eating habits, culture and organization. There is no other subject area or hobby that truly integrates so much richness. Try to think of one? If you look at school subjects, most things are taught in isolation. Not cooking. It is the best well rounded subject I know.

So how are you going to get your kids cooking? Just start them in the kitchen no matter how old they are. Let them mix, pour and help you with simple tasks. Spend time with your child in the kitchen, teach them that cooking is not only a great life skill, but that they can be creative and make things with so many ingredients. Laugh with them at messes and mistakes, and then teach them how to clean it up or fix their mistake. Here are some other suggestions to encourage an interest in cooking:

1) Plan a family night, where you and your child do the shopping for one meal, let your child pick out things and be involved in the process.

2) Have your child help you prepare food for a party, have a "kid friendly menu" for the kids attending the party and create a sign names the food and put your child's picture next to it with a heading "created by Chef____".

3) Praise your child for doing even the simplest task in the kitchen.

4) Enroll your child in a series of cooking classes (four minimum). One class is too short to really learn much, and the child may be shy at first. But by class four, watch out! Your child will want to take more classes.

5) Make cooking a priority in your house so that kids understand the value of food made from scratch.

6) Don't let your child see that you struggle in the kitchen. Relax, and try to have fun with food. Don't prepare "boxed foods", they are not fun or interesting.

As you teach your child the value of cooking, you will be able to step back and let your child prepare some fun treats for you. But don't forget the formal training first.......especially when you don't have the time. Take your child to a series of cooking classes or enroll your child in culinary camp, and then let him or her come home and cook what they learned in class for you. Above all, make cooking fun and pleasurable for your child. And always have an adult supervise the child in the kitchen for safety reasons.

When enrolling your child in a formal cooking class, look for these basic fundamental things that your child can learn: how to safely use a knife (depending on age), how to use appliances safely(depending on age), the difference between herbs and spices, how to bake cakes, cookies, breads, how flavors go together in a dish, measuring, mixing, folding, how to be organized and follow the recipe, how to make a basic dish from scratch, how to make soups and sauces, and how to clean up while they cook. Your child will surprise you, and you'll feel good that your child is learning a healthy skill that will last a lifetime. Coaching Skills Training - What If Coaching Uncovers Personality Disorders

"Respect the power of coaching questions" is one of the first learning points that I cover with the managers I train as coaches. I go on to explain that they must recognize the possibility that what starts as coaching around a simple, work related issue, may lead to the unveiling of a more significant problem. In my view, coaching managers should develop at least a little psychological awareness. Consider for example, the two main types of personality disorder, Multiple Personality and Antisocial Personality Disorder.

Multiple Personality

It is increasingly being recognized that it may be possible for more than one personality to exist within the same individual. This is a fascinating area of abnormal psychology but must not be confused with schizophrenia which is about divisions within one personality.

In studying sufferers of this condition, psychologists and other observers may notice two or more distinct personalities emerging. The emergence of one of the 'alternative' personalities will be marked by obvious changes in posture, language and tone. In some cases, the alternative personalities may not be aware of the existence of each other and may each be quite different. It is almost as if there is a 'good side' and a 'bad side'of the same individual.

The condition is thought to arise when, in an attempt to cope with a traumatic experience, an individual slips into a kind of fugue state; a sort of self-hypnosis. If this successfully provides relief, then the method is used time and again until the alternate personalities are effectively set in place and can be summoned at will.

Thigpen and Cleckley (1954) uncovered 'Eve White,' 'Eve Black' and 'Eve Grey' within the same young lady, each with a very different personality. It is easy to see why, in less sophisticated times, sufferers would be dismissed as being possessed.

Antisocial Personality Disorder

Once called Psychopaths or Sociopaths, the distinguishing feature for sufferers of this condition is that there is little if any personal trauma. The sociopath is perfectly self-content but a danger to society as the condition is marked by an absence of morality or conscience.

Symptons include: emotional flatness and a lack of empathy, a disposition towards senseless, often violent crime and a tendency towards lying, theft and vandalism.

Treatment is very difficult; Imprisonment simply gives access to other criminals, physical punishment is counter-productive and psychotherapy usually fails to bring about the required insight. Non-institutional, moderate punishment is considered the most effective.

The sociopath has provided a rich vein of source material in recent times for the writers and producers of written and filmed thrillers. The best known example being Dr Hannibal Lekter from the book and the film: The Silence of the Lambs.

What then of the coaching manager who perhaps unwittingly uncovers signs of such issues when coaching around workload management or time keeping? Best advice would seem to be to keep to good coaching principles. Ask questions designed to raise awareness, generate responsibility and build trust then listen carefully and attentively to the responses. This is highly unlikely to make things worse and may actually do quite a lot of good.

After that, it's a question of referring the coachee to the relevant professional. I therefore recommend that managers with an interest in coaching this way familiarize themselves with their organization's welfare procedure.

During a conference call of a mastermind group of 30 professional business coaches and consultants, who had all been coaches for over 5 years, the discussion turned to the "coaching certification" process for coaches. What was interesting to note is that this mastermind group was unusual in that everyone had surpassed the industry average of making more than $20,000, exceeded 10 paying clients and 1/3 made more than $100,000. If the subject of credentials came up, it was always by another certified coach. Interesting given that no one within this group was a "certified coach."

With the continued growth of this billion dollar plus industry, it appears that innovative individuals have decided to provide opportunities for those who wish to become coaches and by offering a certification process. Good for them! After all being certified automatically means that you are more credible and can deliver better results? Of course if this was true, then why do most coaches (53%) make less than $20,000 a year?

Possibly, the answer is a lack of a proven process not to mention some poor small business practices. Certification programs may offer the techniques and some tools, but do they have a proven history that consistently demonstrates securing results for their clients? I doubt it given that the majority of coaching schools are relatively new and even established traditional universities that offer executive coaching programs are new to this field.

If you are thinking about becoming an executive coach, do your research. Before you spend thousands of dollars on that coaching certification program, ask the following questions:

Do over 60% of your certified coaches make more than $50,000? (Note: For this mastermind group, this is anywhere from 10 to 15 minimum clients per year.)

What type of results do their clients receive? (Note: The process that this mastermind group uses generally doubles results in 30 to 90 days.)

Three- By planning a menu you will actually be thinking about what you will be eating and so will be more inclined towards healthier eating.

Why not plan some of your meals around the special offers at your local supermarket? At the moment there seems to be a drive towards offering the basics like bread, milk, vegetables and fruit for around a £1.00 or less. This means you can buy in bulk thus saving your more money.

2) Keep staples like bread, rice, pasta and potatoes in the cupboard, as they are great fillers and inexpensive to use.

3) For all your planning they will be times when you will run out of that essential ingredient whilst cooking. Do not panic! There are many substitutes that you can use which will not mar the flavour of your recipe. You may not even notice the difference and the alternative may even be healthier for you.
For example run out of wine? Use cranberry juice for red wine and white grape juice for white wine.
Run out of butter use margarine.
Need to make a gravy or sauce, use condensed soup and add your own flavourings. No pasta use noodles or spaghetti
No self raising flour? Use plain flour and baking powder mixed together.

4) Get the family involved in making complete meals for the week, which you can freeze and eat as and when. The benefits of this are two fold: First kids learn how to cook and you can also combine parts of the curriculum into their cooking sessions.

5) Invest in a slow cooker and become excited about one pot recipes and slow cooking. Here you can throw everything in and leave to cook throughout the day. Great if you are busy and of course less washing up!

6) Use leftovers by freezing and making another meal from them. You can use the leftovers in sandwiches or turn it into a tasty lunch by adding a salad or bake potato.

7) This is a good idea if you know other homeschooling mums. Why not get together and take it in turns to cook a main meal for the other homeschooling mums and their children once a week. You can plan and contribute to the ingredients. Another variation is to have a group of homeschooling mums cook complete meals for the week for their homeschooling group

So go ahead and practice a few of the above tips. You will be surprised at just how much time you will save once you get into a routine. Time that will allow you to carry two of the most important life skills to be learnt in a child's life that of education and cooking.

Do Air Purifiers Remove Cooking Odors From Your Home?

What do you think? Do air purifiers remove cooking odors from your home or work space? And what about cigarette, cigar and pet odors?

These are all good air purifier questions, but there's no simple answer. Removing cooking and other unpleasant odors depends upon the type of air purifier you buy, how powerful it is and even where you place it.

To begin with, when asked, "Do air purifiers remove cooking odors?" I have to respond that an air purifier in the upstairs bedroom, no matter what kind or how effective, will do little to remove the odor of fish frying on your stove in the downstairs kitchen.

Basically, there are about half a dozen different types of air purifiers and they come in various sizes and shapes. The two main types of air purifier systems are mechanical purifiers such as high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters and electrostatic filtration systems like an ionic purifier. They each have their own advantages and disadvantages and some are more effective than others at removing odors.

Activated carbon filters and ozone generator air purifiers are the most effective systems available for removing cooking odors. However, neither is particularly effective at reducing airborne allergens. Activated carbon is simply charcoal that's been treated with oxygen.

The process opens up million of small pores between the air purifier carbon atoms, greatly increasing the surface area of the filter pad. The air purifier filter then works like a sponge to remove odors and soak up harmful gases. A charcoal air filter does need to be changed on a regular basis, but, for the most part, they're not particularly expensive.

Many activated carbon air purifiers are combined with HEPA technology, which is 99.9% effective at eliminating airborne allergens down to 0.3 microns in size. Three tenths of a micron is pretty small, since there are over 600 microns in the period at the end of this sentence.

Ozone air purifiers also remove odors effective, but are not very good at removing allergens. However, ozone generator air purifiers are very controversial. Many experts believe ozone generators are harmful to human health. The State of California, for example, issued a warning that "People should avoid using indoor air cleaning devices that produce ozone."

This is because ozone is the primary chemical found in smog and long term exposure to it can cause eye, throat and nose irritation, as well as permanent lung damage.

Most ozone generator marketers say there's no need to worry, because you don't have to run the device all day and can put it on a low setting. But that still doesn't eliminate the problem. It's like someone telling you, even though cigarette smoke is bad for your health, if you only take a few puffs a day, you'll be okay.

So, back to the original question, "Do air purifiers remove cooking odors?" When you take everything into consideration, a HEPA air purifier system combined with an activated charcoal filter is your best bet. With this type of air purifier system, you can effectively remove offensive cooking, tobacco and pet odors, plus reduce airborne allergens.

And you can do it all without any risk to your health – only benefits.

People tend to be busier these days then ever before. They leave the house early for work, go home after a long day, and still have to face cleaning, cooking, and laundry. It is little wonder that many people take cooking shortcuts, which can lead to issues with weight control and poor nutrition. Instead of feeling like spending time preparing home cooking sauces, dips, gravies and more, they are eating junk food and not realizing what they are doing to their bodies.

Homemade food is better for many different reasons; it tastes better, it is more nutritious, and you control the ingredients that are used. There is nothing like down home southern cooking to spark up that nightly meal.

Precooked, prepackaged, and processed foods seem to have taken over from America's home cooking. There are a lot of heat and eat dinners on the market, many of which are extremely unhealthy and can lead to medical issues in the future. Safety means to be free from risk or danger in your working environment. People who engage in cooking activities make good cook, not only with the delicious dishes they turn out, but also their level of home keeping ability. A major reason people slip, trip and fall in the kitchen is their poor housekeeping ability. Many situations can cause a slip, trip or fall. They include: wet spots, grease, or polished floor, loose flooring or carpeting, uneven walking surface, clutter, electrical cords, etc.

To enhance a safe working or cooking environment, keep the walk ways and stair case clear of scrap and debris, ruts, holes and obstructions. Remember always to lean up spills of oil, grease, or other liquid immediately. Don’t procrastinate. But if cleaning could not be effected immediately, be sure to have it covered with absorbent material until proper cleaning is effected. And please keep cleaning materials away from food.

Keep electrical wires out of the way. Coil up cords, extension cords, line, hoses, etc when not in use. Close cupboards and cabinets when not in use. And ensure proper and adequate lighting inside and outside the kitchen. Ensure there is no gas leakage and if there be found any leakage, fix it immediately. With gas leakage, distant ignition is possible as well as inhalation. This affects the nervous system and can lead to asphyxiation. In the case of fire, shut off supply, but if not possible and no risk to surrounding, let it burn out. However, evacuate danger zone.

Check that all thermostats are functional. Oil temperature must be at recommended temperature and fryers must be filled to the correct level, as indicated in the operator’s manual. There is a danger of possible burn in the case of oil splattering, and so, ensure no water presence in the food. Do not rest containers on the edge of the fryers. Avoid hot water spills, it can cause serious burns. Check container temperature before picking up a pot or kettle from the stove and keep flammable materials away from high temperature and open flame.

Remember to switch off fryers, oven, grills etc before cleaning commences. These are potential fire areas. Even a small fire can become dangerous and out of control. And in case of fire out break, do not attempt to use water to put out fire. Use fire extinguisher instead.

Broken glasses must be disposed immediately to prevent injury. Chipped glasses can cause cut and infectious diseases. Always wear rubber soled or safety shoes. This helps to ward off so many dangers.

Never forget all the necessary safety tips you have learnt so far. Clean oil spills and grease on the floor, make the runway free, and observe a careful handling of electrical gadget, hot oil as well as hot water. Keep fire extinguisher nearby and dispose broken glasses. Wears rubber soled shoes or safety shoes.

Do your kids eat green vegetables? Does your spouse
turn up his/her nose at the site of broccoli? Have
you opted out of the trying to serve green vegetable
game? If so, then this article will educate you on
new ways to prepare those green guys so that your
family will eat them. The main green vegetables that
are readily available in large grocery chains and
warehouse stores are artichokes, asparagus, arugula,
green beans. soy beans,pea pods, English peas, snow
peas, beat greens, okra, bok choy, broccoli, broccoli
raab, broccoflower, brussel sprouts, celery, cabbage,
collard greens, cucumber, green eggplant, endive,
fennel, kale, lettuce, mache, mustard greens, zucchini,
spinach, squash, and chard.

If prepared correctly, most vegetables come to life.
A great example is brussel sprouts. If you remember
brussel sprouts as a kid, your mom probably boiled
them. When you boil brussel sprouts, they get soggy
and bitter. Asparagus is the same way. If you boil
asparagus it gets mushy and stringy. Based on my
experience cooking for four kids, using the hints below
might help your family enjoy green vegetables.

1. Raw - Many vegetables taste great raw. Examples
of such vegetables include green beans, broccoli, lettuce,
peas and pea pods, and celery. Cucumbers are best
prepared raw, even cold. I'm a fan of dipping. In our house,
vegetables can be dipped in ranch dressing or peanut butter.
My feeling is that I would rather the kids dip veggies
than not eat them at all.

2. Steamed - Artichokes, green beans, soy beans,
broccoli, broccoli raab and broccoflower all taste
terrific when steamed. Steaming allows the vegetables
to retain their healthful benefits but makes them easier
to eat and digest. For most steamed vegetables, I cook
until the vegetable is mostly done. If you steam a
vegetable too much, it becomes mushy and tasteless.
Before serving, I add a little butter, Parmesan cheese
or just some salt for taste.

3. Roasting - Perhaps my favorite way to cook almost
any vegetable is roasting. When vegetables are roasted,
they caramelize and become sweeter. I roast asparagus,
green beans, brussel sprouts, eggplant, mustard greens,
zucchini, squash and chard. When you roast leafy greens,
like chard or mustard greens, they get crispy like
potato chips. When you prepare your vegetables, toss
with olive oil and kosher salt then roast until brown
and caramelized.

4. Grilling - Some vegetables need to be partially
cooked before grilling. An example would be artichokes
which are just delicious when you split them in half,
steam first and then finish on the grill. Asparagus,
green beans, zucchini, squash, brussel sprouts,
and eggplant are all terrific on the grill as well.

5. Frying - I am not big on frying vegetables but
some vegetables beg for the oil bath. Okra is a prime
candidate for deep frying.

6. Hiding - When you make your next batch of meatballs,
add spinach, shredded carrots or zucchini. Your family
will hardly notice the veggies which get drenched in
sauce anyhow. There are several cookbooks on the market
which suggest making purees out of vegetables and cooking
with the purees to help increase your family's vegetable
intake.

Make sure to season your vegetables either with salt or
even a spice mixture. Many green vegetables, like most
dishes, are bland without a little seasoning. There are
many alternatives if you are on a low sodium diet or can
not tolerate spicy food. Even just a pinch of salt goes
a long way.

One of the best ways to get your family into green
vegetables is to grow them yourself. I find that when my
kids get to watch vegetables grow, they are more likely
to try those vegetables. When growing your own is not
possible, take your family with you to the farmers market
or shopping at the grocery store. Invite your "guest green
vegetable" to dinner or try one new vegetable per week.

Cooking Supplies and Battling the Winter Blues

Today is January 15, 2007 and I just lived through another power outage. This is the third one in the midwest in the last six months.

The first in July, lasted 8 days and the temperature outside was a balmy 98F Plus. No air conditioning, no refrigeration, no power for even a fan. The second, in late November, missed me for which I am extremely grateful. This latest outage was due to an ice storm on January 12, 2007 and over 150,000 homes in my area were without power. At last check there were still some 80,000. Lucky me, I was one of them. Also, Lucky me, I got my power back in less than forty eight hours.

Again I realize that most of you think I am just ranting but there is a point to this rambling.Sitting in my freezing home by myself - I sent my family to relatives homes - I realized how much I miss the taste of BBQ. I miss the backyard gatherings with family and friends and I cannot wait for the warm spring and hot summer when I can fire up the pit and cook up whatever my heart dictates - ribs, chicken, pork steaks (for those that are unfamiliar this is pork shoulder or butt cut into steaks - 3/4 inch thick is best), burgers, simple hotdogs. Potato salad & cole slaw, watermelon, beer and wine coolers. I am ready. Winter is just too dreary.

I can sometimes satisfy the urge with an electric indoor grill that I have had for years. While it is not the same as a charcoal grill (I prefer charcoal over propane) it does satisfy a need when you combine it with your favorite BBQ sauce, be it bottled or home-made. Now, just for you, if you do not have access to an indoor grill, I am going to give you my absolutely favorite recipe for getting past the BBQ urge in winter. Your can do really great BBQ chicken in the oven:

2 1/2 to 3 lbs. of chicken pieces - either a whole chicken cut up or pieces of your favorite parts - I usually use thighs & drumsticks as I prefer the dark meat

salt & pepper to taste

1/3 cup water

1/2 cup ketchup - use jalapeno ketchup if you want to spice it up a bit

2 Tablespoons brown sugar

1 Tablespoon of either Dijon or Hot Sweet mustard

1/4 cup cider vinegar

1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1/4 teaspoon dried red pepper - like cayenne - if you want a little heat.

Heat oven to 400deg F. Arrange chicken pieces in a deep baking dish and season with salt and pepper if desired.

In a bowl combine water, ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, mustard, worcestershire sauce, and red pepper if desired and pour over chicken pieces.

Bake about 45 minutes, uncovered, then tip the baking dish and skim off the fat.

This one is one of my newest entries and already becoming one of my favorites. Most of my others cover a broad spectrum of cooking like most cookbooks do. That is side dishes, deserts, vegetarian dishes and so on. This one sticks to its guns in specializing in dutch oven meals. Soups, stews, and specialties cooked in a big covered pot. To me there has never been any kind of cooking ever invented that beat the flavor and wholesome goodness of a one pot dinner. They were always wonderful with more than enough to go around for each plate. This book does a mouth watering job of covering hundreds of them. I recommend this book to all of you that miss the nostalgic days of one pot meals, and for the delicious memories that it can bring back again.. i got this for school needing a instant read thermometer. well it isnt instant at all it takes longer than my old analog thermometer. another thing i didnt like about it is the size, its huge it almost dosent fit in my chef jacket. its ok for home use anything more than that i would not get it
I'm a casual cook who loves to grill/broil/bake. I wanted to purchase a basic instant read thermometer that works and decided to give this a try after reading the reviews. So far, I have used this on frying oil, prime rib roasts, steaks of all kinds, ribs, cakes, you name it. It is very easy to use and temperature display adjustments are pretty fast. I wouldn't say its instant but its close enough for my uses (probably takes a few seconds). For the price, its great! MIU: 90077 MIU France digital instant read thermometer, item number 90077. This pocket sized thermometer is a handy tool to have in the kitchen, restaurant or laboratory. Using a thermometer when cooking ensures that food is not under or overcooked. A cap protects the probe while not in use. A convenient clip on the side of the cap, makes it possible to clip it to apron pockets or straps. The thermometer should not be left in the oven. Who can pass up a big dish of chicken wings? Spicy, crunchy, and delicious, they're simply irresistible.

If you like chicken wings as much as I do, below are 4 chicken wing recipes you can prepare at home:

1. Cajun Chicken Wings

Ingredients:

- 12 Chicken wings - tips removed
- 5 Bay leaves - crumbled into bits
- 3/4 teaspoon Caraway seeds
- 1/2 To 3/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
- 3/4 teaspoon Ground cumin
- 3/4 teaspoon Ground coriander
- 4 Garlic cloves - finely
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Dry mustard
- 2 teaspoons Paprika - preferably
- 3/4 teaspoon Dried thyme leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
- 2 tablespoons Brandy
- 2 tablespoons Fresh lemon or lime juice

Directions:

- Defat the chicken wings by cooking them in boiling water for 10 minutes.
- Drain and set aside to cool.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Using a large mortar and pestle, grind together the bay leaf bits, caraway seeds, cayenne pepper, coriander, cumin, garlic, mustard, paprika, thyme and salt for about 10 minutes.
- Add the brandy and lemon or lime juice to the pulverized herbs and stir into a thick paste.
- With a pastry brush, cover both sides of each wing with the herb paste.
- When no more remains in the mortar, squeeze the last few drops from the brush.
- Arrange the chicken wings on a baking sheet.
- Bake until the skin turns deep brown and is quite crisp approximately 30 minutes.

Takes about an hour to prepare.

2. African Chicken Wings

Ingredients:

For the Wings

- 4 Garlic cloves
- 2 Shallots
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Salt
- 1 tablespoon Chinese 5 spice
- 2 teaspoons Paprika
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary - crumbled
- 1/2 teaspoon Cayenne - or to taste
- 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil
- 4 pounds Chicken wings -- about 20-24
- Tips removed

For the Sauce

- 1/3 cup Natural style peanut butter
- 1/4 cup canned cream of coconut - Well stirred
- 2 Garlic cloves - chopped
- 1/4 cup Water
- 1/4 cup Red bell pepper - chopped
- 1/8 teaspoon Dried hot red pepper flakes Or to taste
- 1 teaspoon Soy sauce
- Coriander sprigs

Directions:

The Wings:

- Prepare the chicken wings: Mince and mash the garlic and shallots to a paste with the salt.
- In a large bowl stir the paste together with the 5 spice powder, paprika, rosemary, cayenne, and the oil. Mix well.
- Add the chicken wings.
- Toss and stir them until they are completely covered with the marinade.
- Let them marinate, covered and chilled for 4 hours or over night.
- Arrange the wings, skin side up, on the rack of a foil lined large broiler pan and bake them in the upper third of a preheated 425F oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until they are golden.

The wings may be prepared one day in advance, kept covered and chilled and then reheated before serving.

The Sauce:

- In a blender, blend together the peanut butter, cream of coconut, garlic, water, bell pepper, red pepper flakes and the soy sauce until the mixture is smooth, season the sauce with salt, to taste.

The Presentation:

- Transfer the sauce to a serving bowl set on a platter.

- Arrange the wings around the bowl and garnish the platter with the coriander.

3. Barbecue Wing Dings

Ingredients:

- 3 pounds chicken wing
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 drops Worcestershire sauce
- 4 cups ketchup
- 1 onion

Directions:

- Cut off the small piece of the chicken wing and the bony part so you have only the meaty part.
- Mix the ketchup, onion (cut up), brown sugar and sauce together. Dip wings in the sauce.
- Put on cookie sheet.
- Bake at 350 degrees for about 1 1/2 hour. If you have extra sauce, cook in saucepan until thick.

4. Barbecued Chicken Wings

Ingredients:

- 35 Chicken wings - tips removed
- 1 Stick butter
- 1 cup Brown sugar
- 1/2 tablespoon Sauce
- 1/2 cup Dry red wine
- 2 teaspoons Dry mustard
- 2 large Garlic cloves - crushed
- 1/4 cup Fresh lemon juice and Fresh ground pepper to taste

Directions

Requires marinating and long cooking time but it is simple.

- Place chicken wings, disjointed, in large flat pan.
- Combine other ingredients and pour over chicken.
- Let stand for at least 1 hour or overnight.
- Be sure all wings are well coated with marinade.
- Place pan in 350 in oven and reduce heat to 250.
- Bake 4-5 hours, turning wings at regular intervals.

If all marinade is not absorbed, pour off and dry wings out a bit longer in oven (but not too much) before serving.
